Memories

Memories by Lilia G.

I stomp into the attic, angry at myself
Dust flying as I slam the door
Sink to my knees and rummage about for a memory
Before I lash out at the world.

An old box of photographs
sits idle, waiting for a reply
Black and white and crimson gold
Of years passing by.

So many memories I might have forgotten
If I didn't hold them in my hands
So many memories I might have shoved away
If you weren't there.
If you weren't there.

We're smiling at the camera,
trees around the frame
I think I remember the day we left
For a life of fame.

Oh, that didn't take roots
We marched back after half an hour
But our friendship lasted longer than that
And new ones began to flower

So many memories I might have forgotten
If I didn't hold them in my hands
So many memories I might have shoved away
If you weren't there
If you weren't there.

And there we sit
thinking oh how the time has passed
And we're left with nothing to say
And we're left with knowing the other will stay
While the other will go

And we take one last picture
The one I gaze at most
For who knew death would catch you
For who knew life would pulse through
Your fingertips that withered cold.

So many memories I might have forgotten
If I didn't hold them in my hands
So many memories I might have shoved away
If you weren't there
If you weren't there
Sitting beside me
Blinking, maybe
But it doesn't matter anymore
-

We were kids back then
Thinking we would live forever
We were kids back then
That's how it's always gonna be.
